A Prayer for the Church, our Nation, and World
Pastor Mark Pattie led the congregation at Salem Covenant Church in this prayer during all worship services on Sunday, January 10, 2021.
Lord of all, Giver of every good gift, our Refuge and Hope amid every change and challenge, we look to you in praise and worship, confessing our sin, lamenting the troubles of our world, and praying for your mercy and grace, for us, your Church, and our nation and world.
We thank you for all your many blessings:
for all that is good,
for the blessings we enjoy,
for the joy of serving and blessing others in your name,
for the gift of this land and nation, its beauty and extraordinary wealth of natural resources, for the marvelous diversity and abilities of its people.
Yet we acknowledge our sin, as well, O Lord;
our mistreatment of one another, our disdain and evident lack of love for our neighbors despite your commands and example.
Forgive us, we pray.
Forgive our part in the divisions and injustices of our society;
for the ways in which our actions and words,
and our lack of action and our reticence to speak,
has served to perpetuate prejudice, bigotry, discrimination, and death.
Help us, Lord, not to imagine that we are helpless, nor to believe the lie that we are without hope amid the challenges of our world.
Grant us the grace to believe in you, to hope in you, to pray fervently and believingly to you, and to serve you and your purposes in all we do and say.
Inspire a deep hunger and thirst for your kingdom and righteousness, and empower us by your Spirit to live as peacemakers, that is, as your children in our nation and world.
Create in us clean hearts, O God, and renew a right and willing spirit within us.
Grant us strength of character, vision to pursue noble dreams,
courage to stand up for what is right,
compassion to care for those less fortunate and in need,
perseverance to continue on toward your high calling through every challenge with faith to trust you, learn your way, and follow your leading, for you are the Way, the Truth, and the Life.
Bless, O God, our nation; bless, O God, our leaders;
bless those whom we approve of, those whom we disapprove of and are even dismayed by, and especially those, Lord, who are sincerely trying to serve with integrity. In our nation, states, and local communities, and in nations around the world, grant our leaders perspective, faith, and wisdom as they face the choices before them.
Help us to live out the best of who we are and to seek liberty and justice for all.
Strengthen our efforts to end ignorance and prejudice, to abolish violence and economic injustice, and to enable all people, everywhere, to experience opportunity, harmony, and hope.
Bless, O God, those who seek to serve the common good in positions and places of danger here in our local communities and throughout our nation and world. Grant them safety and your peace, and provide their families with hope and needed support.
And bless, O God, your Church that we may live as witnesses to your glory and goodness in our world.
Grant us your Holy Spirit.
Empower us to live boldly as your beloved people, sharing your love with the world.
Increase our faith and lead us to do justice, to love kindness, and to walk humbly with you and one another, loving you with all our heart, soul, mind and strength, and our neighbor as ourselves, as we look toward the Day when the prophets’ dream shall come true:
when justice shall roll down like waters and righteousness like an ever-flowing stream, when nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more.
This we pray with thanksgiving and confident hope through Jesus Christ our Savior and Lord. Amen.
