GLOCAL: Salem
day camp for elementary students
August 20-23

Using a day-camp style format, students (entering grades 2-5) will learn about different cultures and various needs around the world and have repeated opportunities during this week to interact with those needs and serve others in our local community. Topics will include hunger, poverty, the global water crisis, and refugees.

Outreach Director Shelli Streeper shares some thoughts and highlights from last summer’s service experience:

1. It’s a privilege to provide service learning opportunities for young people. We provide a range of service learning experiences from visiting the Animal Humane Society, the Fire Department, Union Gospel Mission, Feed My Starving Children, Ralph Reeder Food Shelf, and others to doing many on-site projects that bless others around the community and world.

2. These service learning experiences teach students new skills, increase their global mindset, develop personal character qualities, and expand their knowledge of the world around them. 

3. My favorite memory of last summer’s Service Camp was taking twelve children to Covenant Village Nursing Home and seeing the interactions between the ranging ages. It was an evident blessing for young and old alike.

GLOCAL: Duluth
trip for middle school students
July 9-11

Open to students completing grades 6-8

Up to 19 Middle School students will venture north to Duluth, MN to serve others in a variety of ways. Stopping first at Covenant Park Bible Camp, students will help with various work projects like camp meal prep, cleaning up the campgrounds, or helping get cabins ready for the camp’s next guests! During the next two days, students will spend their time serving at and learning about the ministries of Loaves and Fishes, Union Gospel Mission, and the Damiano Center.

Pastor Luke Korthuis, is excited about the GLOCAL: Duluth trip for three reasons: 

1. Students have the opportunity to serve others in a way that is unique and likely out of their comfort zone. Trips like these help to prepare our students for larger trips that we embark on in high school youth group. 

2. We’ve all experienced middle school. We know that many middle schoolers are very focused on their own well-being and there are many pressures around them to fit in. Trips like these help to provide an opportunity for students to realize how important it is to love and serve others. 

3. With the help of the mission’s team and the youth scholarship fund, we are able to make this trip extremely affordable for students. This helps to make the trip more accessible to more students!
