Ash Wednesday at Salem

The Lenten season is an opportunity to honestly examine our lives, sincerely repent of our sin, and whole-heartedly commit ourselves to God. Through the centuries, Christians have found that prayer, fasting, the offering of assistance to those in need, and actions of service for others, along with reading and meditating on the Word of God, powerfully nourish one’s spiritual life. As we begin this season, all are invited to these practices in general, and to commit to at least one in particular, as a means of stepping forward on the path of God’s call in Christ.

During this service, there will be an opportunity to receive the imposition of ashes in the sign of a cross, either on one’s forehead or on the hand. Those who prefer not to receive the ashes are invited to come forward to receive a blessing. For all of us, may the ashes be a reminder of our mortality and may the Cross be a bold proclamation of our eternal hope through the redeeming work of Christ at Calvary.
